Fischbrötchen
My love

It’s been four years

It’s been four years.

Exactly four.

Since that afternoon I spent calling, searching, not knowing.

And then the news came, in the evening.

Since then

A lump in my throat that never leaves.

A tightness in my chest.

Bones that feel cracked open.

Pain that became chronic, like a shadow living inside me.

Four years.

And every year, on this day,

I try to do something special with the boys.

In your memory.

Something gentle.

They don’t know it’s for you. Not directly.

But it is.

It always is.

We’re here now.

Your city.

Where you were young.

Where you laughed with your closest friends.

Your first job after your PhD.

The smell of Fischbrötchen, herring, onions, soft bread.

There’s always a river where you loved to be.

I could fill it with my tears.

We walk through your past,

chasing the stories you used to tell us.

You lived in so many places,

we haven’t even finished the European tour yet.

Last night, Leo scolded me, in his clumsy sweet way,

because I was trying to fall asleep with my phone in my hand.

I put it down.

Because it felt nice,

being taken care of by him.

But sleep didn’t come.

Not for an hour.

Maybe more.

The thoughts wouldn’t stop.

Same as always.

Four years.

And I miss you in a way that words will never be enough for.

But I’ll keep walking through your cities,

I’ll keep holding our boys close,

and I’ll keep talking to you in the quiet,

where I hope you can still hear me.

Sono passati quattro anni.
Esattamente quattro.
Dolore divenuto cronico, ombra che in me vive.

Quattro anni.
In tua memoria.
Qualcosa di gentile.
Loro non sanno che è per te. Non direttamente.
Ma lo è.
Lo è sempre.

Siamo qui adesso.
La tua città.
Dove eri giovane.

Hai vissuto in così tanti posti,
L’ho posato.
Perché è stato bello,
sentirmi accudita da lui.

Ma il sonno non è venuto.
Non per un’ora.
Forse di più.
I pensieri non smettevano.
Come sempre.

Quattro anni.
continuerò a tenere stretti i nostri ragazzi,
e continuerò a parlarti nel silenzio,
dove spero tu mi possa ancora sentire.
